World Alzheimer’s Day – 21 September

Today we join people all over the world in raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the impact it has on individuals, families and communities.

At Orchids Care in Doncaster, we support many people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We see first-hand the courage of our clients and their families, and the difference compassionate, specialist care can make.

This year’s theme is all about understanding, support and inclusion. Small acts listening patiently, creating familiar routines, or offering a friendly smile, can help someone with Alzheimer’s feel safe and valued. Our trained team uses dementia-friendly approaches to maintain dignity, independence and quality of life at every stage.

If you’re caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and need advice, respite or support, our door is open. Together, we can help more people live well with dementia.

Caring Through the Dark Nights – Staying Safe and Well in the Winter Months

As autumn turns into winter, the nights grow longer, the days shorter and it can be a tough time for many, especially for those living with dementia, neurological conditions, or who are elderly. At Orchids Care in Doncaster, we prepare all year so that our clients feel safe, comfortable, connected and well cared for during the darker, colder months.

One immediate issue is physical wellbeing. Cold weather can bring risks: hypothermia, slips and falls, respiratory issues, and feeling cold in general. We make sure heating systems are working, homes are well-insulated, windows and doors draft-proofed, carpets and rugs are slip-resistant. We also monitor hydration and nutrition carefully, because people often drink less in cold weather and appetite can decrease.

Another big concern is mental and emotional wellbeing. Dark nights, less daylight, fewer opportunities to get outside can increase feelings of loneliness, depression or confusion especially in people with dementia or neurodegenerative conditions. To mitigate this, we prioritise good lighting inside homes, maintain consistent daily routines, encourage gentle indoor physical activity, bring in daylight lamps where helpful, and schedule social visits or group activities.

Sleep patterns tend to change too. Some clients may struggle more with sleep in winter restlessness at night, waking early, or confusion. We work with clients and families to adapt bedtime routines, reduce noise, make sleeping environments soothing, avoid overstimulation before bed, and ensure safety measures if wandering or confusion are issues.

Also, winter brings risks of illness. Colds, flu, chest infections, or even seasonal viruses hit harder. We’re vigilant about infection control, ensure flu vaccinations are up to date, encourage handwashing, hygiene, and monitor symptoms carefully.

Finally, loneliness often spikes. We encourage social contact: via phone calls, virtual meetups, family visits, safe outings. Encouraging hobbies, music, reminiscence therapy, reading, or crafts can make a big difference to mood.

At Orchids Care, we plan ahead. If you have concerns about how your loved one will cope this winter, let’s talk so we can put the right supports in place now and help make the dark nights more manageable and comforting.

Specialist Neurological Care in Doncaster

Neurological care is complex, whether someone has had a brain injury (from trauma, stroke, or accident), or lives with a degenerative condition like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, motor neuron disease, or another neurological issue. At Orchids Care in Doncaster, we offer specialist support that blends medical needs with compassionate care for the mind, body and spirit.

When someone has a brain injury, their needs often change over time cognition, memory, speech, mobility, mood and behaviour can all be affected. We work with medical professionals, therapists, speech & language specialists, occupational therapists and families to form care plans that support rehabilitation as well as long-term stability. For degenerative brain conditions, our care helps slow decline, maintain quality of life, adapt environments, anticipate needs, and support dignity at every stage.

Sensory stimulation, meaningful routines, memory aids, and familiar environments are vital. Our trained carers anticipate triggers of confusion or distress, provide reassurance, and keep communication clear and calm. For many clients, anxiety, depression or confusion can increase; our staff are patient, compassionate, and constantly learning best practices for neurological care.

We also focus on social connection: engaging clients in activities they enjoy, facilitating visits or calls with family, supporting hobbies, and ensuring residents have choices. Small things like familiar music, favourite meals, or simple crafts can provide comfort, purpose and joy.

Safety is crucial, falls, seizures, wandering, swallowing difficulties; all these risks are part of what we monitor and manage proactively. Our homes are set up to be safe; equipment is assessed regularly; training is kept up to date.

Learning Disability Care That Focuses on Ability, Not Limitation

Every person has strengths, hopes, dreams and ability. At Orchids Care, our learning disability care is built around seeing those abilities, not merely focusing on what someone can’t do. Based in Doncaster, our approach is warm, empowering and person-centred.

Many people with learning disabilities benefit enormously from support in daily life: developing life skills, communication, social interaction, accessing healthcare, navigating the community, enjoying hobbies, and building independence. We collaborate with clients to create Individual Support Plans that set realistic goals; for instance, learning to cook simple meals, using public transport with confidence, or joining local clubs or activities. These goals are not about what someone ‘should’ do they’re about what they want to do.

Training for our staff is continuous. From understanding different learning needs, sensory issues, communication aids, to compassionate approaches that reduce anxiety and build trust—this ensures our team is equipped to respond sensitively. It’s very important that clients feel safe, respected, listened to.

Family involvement is central. We encourage communication with family members and guardians to understand each person’s background, their preferences, and their aspirations. This might include hobbies they’ve had in the past, music they love, or places they like to go keeping those connections alive is very beneficial to emotional health.

Finally, wellbeing is more than physical—mental health, self-esteem, and social connection matter just as much. When isolation or anxiety emerge (which can happen especially in times of change or during darker, colder months), we offer counselling, peer support, meaningful social engagement, and opportunities to build friendships.
